Patrick Bamford, currently on loan at Middlesbrough from Chelsea, claimed the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year award. His brilliant exploits with Aitor Karanka’s Boro this season helped him beat Ipswich Town’s Daryl Murphy and Watford’s Troy Deeney to the prize.
The 21-year-old has been among Boro’s top performers despite having joined them late and missing the first few games of the season. He has scored 19 goals in 37 games for Middlesbrough and is currently scoring a goal every 2.6 shots. He even scored against Manchester City in the FA Cup when Boro knocked them out 2-0.
Bamford was also nominated for the Football League Young Player of the Year award but was beaten to it by Delle Ali – another player on loan from Tottenham Hotspurs at MK Dons.
Middlesbrough are currently third in the Championship table behind Watford and Bournemouth. The top 4 sides are only separated by three points and with only two games remaining for al teams in the fight for qualification, there will be a fight to the finish for automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Bamford maintains that he is unsure of his Chelsea future but his focus primarily remains on Middlesbrough and their push for promotion and Jose Mourinho’s focus will be on the Premier League title at the moment.
Based on his performances so far, the striker who rejected Harvard to pursue a career in football seems to have made the correct decision.
