Chelsea might have made a smashing start to their Premier League campaign, but manager Jose Mourinho has warned his boys from being complacent and has urged them to keep the momentum going. The Blues defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at home on Saturday with goals from Diego Costa and Eden Hazard. The win also meant that they extended their lead at the top by 7 points over second-placed Southampton.
“We need to keep up the pressure”
But the 52-year-old former Real Madrid manager was quick to point out that there is still a long way to go in the season and wants his players to not take the foot off the gas.
“We are playing fantastically well, we are getting results, but at the end of the season if you don’t manage to get some silverware then it is a frustration,” he said.
He felt that his side had scored two goals less than what they should’ve at half-time, but didn’t want to dwell too much on the negatives.
“It should have been 4-0 at half-time and it was 2-0. Quickly, you have a negative. There are always negatives. If you dig, if you try to find it, you always find it.” he said.
French striker Loïc Rémy echoed his manager’s statements by saying that this squad has a great chance of winning silverware this year but needs to remain focused and not think too far ahead.
“I think every player is conscious we can really win something this year but the most important thing is to stay focused about the same thing and don’t think the league is already won because I think it is a trap if we think that. We just have to try to win game after game and we know there are a lot of games coming so we have to be careful and play the same way we are playing at the minute”, the 27-year-old said.
Ramos is not a doctor: Mourinho
Reacting to Sergio Ramos’s comments about certain players not showing more commitment to their country, Mourinho said that he respects Ramos as a footballer but said that the 28-year-old Real Madrid defender was no doctor.
“I know Sergio Ramos is a fantastic football player, but he is not a doctor. My doctor and the doctor of the Spanish national team, they had the scans and they decided that the player was not in the condition to play. I am nobody – nobody – to go against it and I don’t think Sergio did a medicine Masters in the last couple of years to understand about it”, said the Portuguese manager.
