Chelsea might be forced to keep expensive flop Falcao till the end of the season

Falcao’s career has been dogged by injuries

Radamel Falcao has had a terrible start to his life at Chelsea after joining the Blues on loan from Monaco at the start of the season. The Colombian’s spell in England is turning out to be a nightmare after having experienced a similarly unsuccessful stint at Manchester United.

Falcao has been out with an injury since October and has picked up another one in a training game at Cobham. Chelsea’s plans of sending him back look dampened with this injury as he is unlikely to find any suitors in January.

Hiddink had Falcao in his plans

Interim manager Guus Hiddink had Falcao in his plans and he was looking forward to the striker’s return but the current injury means that Falcao will miss another 10 days of training and it is not yet confirmed when he will be ready to play. Falcao’s season-long loan has already been an expensive failure as he has only started one Premier League game and scored one goal in all competitions.

Hiddink said: “We had him (Falcao) in a game. I can't remember the day, but we had him in a game and he had this injury again that he had before. It's the inside of his thigh.”

“He was out and our medical staff tried to build him up, and he had a setback which is not always a positive signal. We hope within 10 days he might be fit again (to train). Not to play, no,” he added.

Asked whether Falcao is now back to square one in terms of his fitness, Hiddink added: “Yes, yes. I think so. He's in treatment at the moment. He cannot appear on the pitch.”

Hiddink unsure of Falcao’s future at Chelsea

Hiddink confirmed that there has not been any confirmation of Falcao’s future at Chelsea and claimed that he cannot rule out the possibilty of the striker seeking new pastures in January. We have an open period from the first to the last day of the January window,” said Hiddink.

“First of all it's important, in the situation Chelsea are in, that we have the most powerful squad possible. If something happens, always there are consequences.”

Hiddink also mentioned his dependence on Diego Costa for their trip against Crystal Palace on Sunday with Loic Remy and Falcao injured. The Dutchman refused to rule out a move to sign a striker, but only if Chelsea are having injury problems.

“Remy should be okay in a few days,” said Hiddink. “I don't know about the weekend, but soon after. But if it's a longer period of instability regarding the recovery of strikers, then yes (we need a striker). We have just Diego.”
