Chelsea to offer John Terry a new deal

With a number of Chelsea veterans – remnants of the clubs’ successful 2004–2007 Mourinho squad – each entering the twilight of their career, the Blues have administered a spate of 12-month contract extensions over recent seasons. Now it appears to be John Terry’s turn to put pen to paper, as according to the Mirror, Mourinho will use his considerable influence at Stamford Bridge to convince the Russian owner, Roman Abramovich, to offer the ex-England captain a new deal.

Despite being 33-years-old, Terry has played every minute of Chelsea’s Premier League campaign so far this season and has even contributed crucial goals in big games with Tottenham and Southampton, saving the Blues from a derby defeat through scoring in the former.

As reward for his enduring form, and largely due to Mourinho’s return, it is reported that the deal will be facilitated smoothly, as opposed to the long-winded affair and periods of uncertainty experienced by Chelsea’s top goalscorer of all time, Frank Lampard.

The centre-back will be free to talk to other clubs in January, as was both Lampard and Ashley Cole, and given that Terry continues to demonstrate the value of his experience and skill, a host of clubs will no doubt come in for the seasoned footballer on a free transfer next summer. However, the lure of working with an old familiar manager, and one with whom he has achieved a great deal of success, is expected to be too much for the one-club Chelsea man.
