Chelsea frontman Diego Costa is set to be offered a new bumper contract that will see the player stay at Chelsea until the end of his playing days. The Spanish International Costa is in the goal-scoring form of his career and has already thumped in a remarkable 13 goals this season. Costa currently leads the Premier League’s scoring charts, 1 goal ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez in second place.
Costa’s goals and performances leading the Chelsea front-line have lifted the London club to the summit of the Premier League in a short space of time and have seen the Blues record a massive 11 game winning streak.
It is understood that Chelsea are looking to give Costa a two-year extension to his current deal, which will see him stay at Stamford Bridge until 2021.
The powerful striker Costa signed a five-year deal earning £150,000-a-week at the time of joining from Spanish side Atletico Madrid for £32m in 2014, but this new deal will see the Spaniard earn a reported figure in the region of £200,000-a-week.
Things were a bit uncertain in the summer when Atletico tried to re-sign the player but he has been re-vitalised under new Italian boss Antonio Conte.
His current run of form has seen the forward score six goals in his last eight games and he looks to be back to his best after a tame season last time around.
He has quite surprisingly also cleaned up his disciplinary act, going 10 games without a booking until his caution in Chelsea’s last game against Crystal Palace which will force him to miss their Boxing Day game against Bournemouth.
Chelsea are understandably looking to tie down their prized asset Costa, after a series of spectacular performances from the striker including assists(4 in 8 games) as well.
Blues boss Antonio Conte is also delighted with the forward’s form saying last week, “Diego is playing fantastically, I'm pleased for him and the fans. He's showing his passion in the right way.”
Diego Costa’s performances have seen Chelsea quickly become title favourites for the Premier League title and have made the Spain International one of the most sought after strikers in the game.
Should Costa sign the extension offered by Chelsea, it would see the player retire at the club and at his current rate of goalscoring – scoring his first 50 goals for the club in 97 games as compared to Blues legend Didier Drogba’s 112 – he could end his career as one of the deadliest strikers to have played at Stamford Bridge.
