Chelsea set to buy Kingsmeadow stadium from AFC Wimbledon

The Kingsmeadow Stadium

Chelsea are in advanced talks to buy the 4800 capacity Kingsmeadow stadium, which is the home of AFC Wimbledon, Mirror reports. The Blues want to use the stadium for their youth and Ladies teams, who don’t have stadiums of their own.

The issue was put to vote for the Dons Trust Members, as mentioned on their official website, and 98 percent of the members voted in favour of selling the ground.

The Dons want to move away from the Kingsmeadow, back to where the yesteryears Wimbledon FC played between 1912 and 1991, the Plough Lane. The fans of the club consider Plough lane in Merton as their spiritual home, and the club has already announced it’s plans to move back.

On 14 November 2014, Wimbledon released a statement on their official website, stating that the plans for a new stadium were submitted to the council. The club wants to build a stadium with an initial capacity of 11,000 with permission to extend it to 20,000.

Chelsea want a permanent venue for their youth and women’s teams, because the U21 team uses the Recreation Ground, home of Aldershot Town FC and the women’s team plays at Wheatsheaf Park, the home of Staines Town FC.

The Premier League defending champions will make an initial payment of £600,000 once an agreement between the two clubs is reached. Two further installments of the payment will be made, first, when the Blues receive the lease, and next when AFC Wimbledon move out of the stadium.

Fate of the deal to be decided on November the 14th

After the initial news about Chelsea’s interest in the stadium came out last November, a Chelsea spokesperson told the Daily Mail, “I can confirm Chelsea FC is in preliminary discussions with AFC Wimbledon regarding taking control of the Kingsmeadow Stadium in order to play our academy and women's matches there, should AFC Wimbledon proceed with its intended move to Plough Lane.”

The second stage of the voting is set to end by 7.30pm on 14 November. The results of the second stage voting for “Back in Two Ticks” campaign will be announced in the Dons Trust SGM on 16 November, the club confirmed.

Wimbledon famously won the FA Cup in 1988, when they defeated the giants of English football, Liverpool, and shocked everyone. The team which won the final at Wembley in front of more than 95000 spectators was termed as the ‘Crazy Gang’.
