If there was one surprise for me at the start of the season it was the fact that Michael Essien was hardly involved!
We all sat and watched his performances in pre season. He looked hungry and sharp once again and looked as though the knee problems that have plagued his recent Chelsea career were a distant memory.
In addition, we also heard the unfortunate news that Marco Van Ginkel had been injured and was out for the remainder of the season. Surely, Essien would find himself considered for each and every game as a starter based on Jose Mourinho’s squad rotation?
Unfortunately, it has not happened and Essien remains just a bit part player at the club. With a start here and there or a substitute appearance, Essien (according to reports) is considering his future this season with a view to being selected for the Ghanaian World Cup squad next summer.
It’s being reported that Essien has been offered the chance to return to to his first European club, Bastia on loan for the remainder of the season to get much needed regular first team football and I believe he would jump at the opportunity based on his involvement so far for Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho has said that he cannot see anyone coming into Chelsea or leaving but with the World Cup in Brazil just a couple of months away, there will be certain players who feel as though they are not being given a chance and will want to go out on loan or move away from the club.
What do you think of Essien? Do you think he should be playing more this season? Tomorrow is the ideal opportunity with Ramires suspended against Liverpool or do you think that a loan move is the best option for him ?
