Although Chelsea have not yet commented on the situation, it is feared that Didier Drogba could potentially miss the first half of the season with an ankle injury.
The Ivory Coast international limped off after 28 minutes in Chelsea’s pre-season friendly win over Ferencvaros. The 36-year-old landed awkwardly after trying to win an aerial duel in the box.
Although he was substituted immediately, the striker said after the match that the injury wasn’t as bad as he thought it was.
“I twisted my ankle and I couldn’t continue,” he said.
“In the next few days we are going to do some treatment and I hope everything will be better.”
Drogba may have torn ligaments in his ankle
But according to reports, the injury could be worse than it looked with Drogba’s preliminary tests confirming that he had torn his ankle ligaments.
If the reports are indeed true, the Blues legend could be sidelined for four to six months and wouldn’t be back until February.
Drogba had just recently returned to Chelsea having signed a on-year deal. If this injury is confirmed, Blues boss Jose Mourinho may have to dive into the transfer market to look for a replacement striker.
