Chelsea’s Top 3 Wonderkids in 2013/14

Andre Schurrle

Andre Schurrle

Chelsea have been bulldozing their way to the Premier League title this season. There haven’t been many inspiring performances, as you would expect from a Jose Mourinho team, but he has found a winning formula and it’s placed them at the summit, four points clear.

The chasing pack are right on their tails but they will do everything they can to fend them off. The ‘old guard’ have always been at Chelsea since Mourinho first took over in 2004 but, this time around, it is the emergence of much younger talent that have propelled the Blues to the top of the league.

Here are Chelsea’s best players aged 23-and-under based on the Squawka Performance Score.

3. Andre Schurrle (272)

It has been a strange season for Schurrle. He has been on the sidelines for the majority of the season and only used as an impact player, but when he’s played, he’s impressed. Most recently, he came into the side and scored a great hat-trick against Fulham.

His six goals places him as the top of Chelsea’s striker scoring chart. It wasn’t hard to earn that place as Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have all been terrible in front of goal, but it is still an achievement due to the lack of minutes he has played.

Hazard has played 2365 minutes compared to Schurrle’s 763 – an enormous difference.

In his 20 appearances, the German has created 18 chances but completed just 9 take-ons. It has been a decent season for Schurrle but he’ll be hoping for much improvement over the summer and heading into next season.2. Oscar (299)

Oscar

Oscar

The Brazilian started the season in fine form, taking the acclaim from those around him. However, his performances levelled out and Hazard took over, but Oscar is still one of Chelsea’s key players in their fierce attack behind the main striker.

The Blues have arguably the best set of attacking midfielders in the Premier League and Oscar plays a huge role in that. He has created 36 chances and scored six goals this season. He led the way with six goals until Hazard hit form so it has been an impressive season for the Brazilian who will definitely be going to the World Cup in the summer.

Juan Mata was foul of Mourinho’s style and left the club. Some thought it was because he didn’t work hard enough off the ball and Oscar was included in the team because he did. It shows as the diminutive Brazilian star has won 45 tackles this season, more than double of what Mata has (20).1. Eden Hazard (1102)

Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard

Hands down, the best player at the club this season is Eden Hazard. He has been sensational and is constantly improving, too. He recently scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge to dazzle the home supporters even more and the Belgian is the club’s top scorer this season, with 12 goals in the league.

At the start of the season it was Oscar stealing the headlines but Hazard soon got to work on claiming them for himself with a long run of superb performances. One of his best was away at Manchester City as Chelsea took the title race by the scruff of the neck.

He has been untouchable at Chelsea in recent months, notching up 77 key passes – the most in the league – and completing 106 take-ons, again, the most in the league.

He will be up for the Player of the Year award when award season comes around and he may scoop the Young Player of the Year. Who would vote against him?
