Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has set his sights on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti to boost his midfield and if reports are to be believed then, the latter is open to leaving PSG. The Blues manager is keen on bringing in the Italy International and is set to rival Manchester United for the player’s signature. The Italian manager is willing to let go of John Obi Mikel and Cesc Fabregas so as to make way for the 24-year-old midfielder.
Chelsea had a disappointing summer transfer; having failed to bring in much-needed quality in the squad. The Blues manager is determined to revamp his squad and has the full support of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich regarding the same. Thus, the Italian manager is keeping close tabs on Verratti’s situation.
A creative, hardworking and technically gifted player, Verratti started his career with Italian club Pescara in 2008. The player went on to become one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe, helping his side win the 2011-2012 Serie B title and winning the 2012 Bravo Award. He went on to join PSG in July 2012 on a five-year contract. Verratti has won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles, which includes domestic and individual trophies.
A talented playmaker, with excellent dribbling skills and close ball control, who can perform well under pressure, Verratti has often been likened to Italy legend Andrea Pirlo for his attributes and playing style.
Conte is familiar with the player’s talents and is willing to make changes in his current squad to accommodate Verratti, having worked with the player during their time together at Azzurri.
The 24-year-old Italian, signed a new five-year contract at PSG this August, which will see him at the club until 2021, however, according to the player’s agent Donato Di Campli, Verratti is open to a move out of the club. This is a contrast to the player’s earlier comments, stating that he will not be leaving the French Champions until they win the Champions League football.
Verratti’s move to Chelsea, if he does sign up for the Blues, will see Chelsea sacrifice Cesc Fabregas, who has attracted interest from West Ham United as a potential replacement for Dimitri Payet. Fabregas, whose form has depleted since awhile, is sure to welcome a chance to play regular first-team football elsewhere. The Hammers are reportedly preparing a huge bid to snap the player in the January transfer window.
