Chelsea has started off their December campaign on to a great start with a 4-3 win against Sunderland on Wednesday. They have previously defeated Southampton 3-1 and are gearing up for their next fixture against Stoke City tonight.
Having won the first two of their nine games this month, Chelsea will look to keep up their winning streak before their fixtures against title favorites Arsenal and Liverpool later this month.
Jose Mourinho who complained about the team’s tight schedule was delighted after the its win against Sunderland. The eccentric manager who previously stated that his team was too tired and lacked consistency applauded his team’s performance and said it was an amazing victory.
He said, “We played a phenomenal game, the best game away from home. It was top quality, building up well, great creativity with the three attacking players behind Fernando [Torres] – Mata, Willian and Eden – beautiful goals.”
Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard‘s form is a huge morale boost to the entire team. The two players have coordinated exceptionally well and have played a major part in the team’s second place stint in the league standings for the past two weeks. Spaniards Mata and Torres are also in good form and are working hard to make their presence felt in the Premier League.
Another injured Brazilian, Oscar, is expected to come back very soon. The 22 year old playmaker known for his superior skills in passing as well as finishing has been the side’s second leading goal scorer with 5 goals in 13 games.
Chelsea’s biggest concern, however, is its defense. They have conceded three goals to Sunderland and offered no resistance against the attacking Black Cats. With Brazilian defender David Luiz injured and Ashley Cole fighting for his spot with Cesar Azpilicueta, Mourinho will try to instill confidence in the defense department which looked lost ever since the beginning of the season.
Nevertheless, with the next three games against Stoke City, Crystal Palace and Sunderland, Mourinho has got a chance to discipline his side before they go on to face Arsenal, Swansea and Liverpool in the last week of the year.
Chelsea’s performance this month will answer a lot of questions before the opening of the transfer market in January.
