Paul Scholes in his column for The Independent expressed surprise at John Terry’s omission from the list of nominees for Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year award.
He noted, “Terry has been the key figure in the team that will win the title this year; a key figure because Chelsea are essentially a defensive team.”
However, the former Manchester United midfielder does not believe that the 34-year-old Chelsea captain would be the right choice to win the award. That honour in his opinion belongs to another Chelsea player, the little Belgian Eden Hazard.
He stated: “[Hazard is] not streets ahead of the likes of Harry Kane, and nothing like the wow-factor of those two big players at Barcelona and Real Madrid. But Hazard has made the difference in big games, like the one against Manchester United.
“If I were to place the six shortlisted players, plus Terry, in order, I would rank them like this: 1) Hazard; 2) Kane; 3) Terry; 4) David de Gea; 5) Philippe Coutinho; 6) Alexis Sanchez; 7) Diego Costa.”
John Terry and Paul Scholes played for rivals in the Premier League but were England team-mates for a couple of years in the early 2000s
