Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will be out for the next eight to ten weeks with the shoulder injury that has seen him miss the tail end of the season, but is likely to be fit for the start of pre-season training and the beginning of the new Premier League campaign.
Cech picked up the injury in the first leg of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final with Atletico Madrid, forcing him to miss the second leg and the rest of the season.
The Czech international has now gone under the knife and will be side-lined for the next eight weeks.
“Petr Cech successfully underwent surgery today (Wednesday) following his shoulder dislocation in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid,” confirmed Chelsea’s official website.
“He will be out for approximately eight to 10 weeks.”
Cech has made 34 league appearances this season, keeping 16 clean sheets, but may face competition for his place at Chelsea next season from Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian has impressed on loan at Atletico Madrid over the past few seasons and may return to his parent club in the summer, giving Jose Mourinho a choice to make over his long term number one.
Should Cech return as expected, then Mourinho will have the whole of pre-season to undergo a Cech vs Courtois comparison and decide upon his number one.
