Chicharito keen to stay at United and learn from Van Persie & Rooney

The news of Robin van Persie’s imminent arrival at the club was met with worry from some United fans two weeks ago when a few news sources reported that, following the Dutch forward’s arrival, Chicharito had handed in a transfer request. A repeat of an impressive first season was too much to ask for from the Mexican and, with Danny Welbeck already ahead of him in the pecking order before Van Persie’s arrival, it was hard to see how he’d get a chance to prove his worth once again as a 4th or 5th choice striker. Thankfully the rumours were proven to be false, and even though we’re two games into the new season and Chicharito is yet to even make the bench for United, Chicharito’s latest interview (undertaken by ManUtd.com) suggests he wants to stay at United for as long as possible and learn from the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

Chicharito said “I will learn a lot off Robin because he is a world-class striker who has a lot to give to the team and a lot to teach us all.” Despite suffering numerous injuries last season and struggling to get game time in front of an in-form Danny Welbeck, Hernandez still scored an impressive 12 goals from 18 starts, with a further 10 appearances coming off the bench. He added “In life you never stop learning, no matter what age you are. I try to learn from all my team-mates, but obviously it’s great to watch the other strikers in particular. Even if you’re not a United fan, you should watch players like Robin and Wazza because they are world class. Robin is someone I have always enjoyed watching – he did a lot of great things for Arsenal and we want him to do the same for us.”

Finally, Hernandez says he hopes to thrive under the pressure of having to perform to earn a place in the team, something he seemingly did last year when he was given the chance to. “The great thing about this club is you know you will get opportunities because we play so many games in different tournaments,” he said. “There is competition for places but you always have that. There are only 11 places each week and you need to do your best to get one of those places, but it’s great to have that competition because it means every player will have to raise the level of their game.” The striker still uses a similar phrase used during his successful first season – “I just focus on doing my best every day in training and in every game so I can help my team-mates get closer to achieving our targets of winning the league and all the competitions we play in.”
