One thing I always like about the Mexican football, that they always manage to surprise you in front of big teams. Yes, their National team still dreaming of reaching the semi-final of World Cup, but when they face big giants they are up to the challenge. Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Italy all either suffered of hardly passed Mexico when facing them in WC games (apart of Argentina 2010 game).
Now, in a friendly at Miami, where Mexicans can feel home, Chivas from Mexico beat Barcelona 4-1 in the pre-season preparations. Chivas looked very eager, serious and brave in front what is perceived as one of best teams in the history of football. Among the five goals, at least three were great, one was an amazing bicycle kick:
David Villa scored a nice goal, and missed to score a very clever another goal, well, that miss reminded me of the great quality of Romario, who scored that goal from a more difficult angle in the mid-90s
Okay, should Barca fans get worried? I don’t think so. Friendly game is a friendly game, and has nothing to do with the serious games. I remember in preparations for 2002 season, the year that Zizou came to Real Madrid, and did an amazing year and won CL, they had a friendly in Egypt against Al-Ahli from Cairo. Egyptians called it the game of the century, as it was between Real Madrid, the best team in century in Europe vs. Al-Ahli, undoubtedly, the best team in century in Africa.
Surprisingly, Al-Ahli had a deserved 1-0 victory and with a nice goal
Another example, also when Real Madrid had a friendly in Saudi Arabia, they lost to Al-Nasr 1-4 with also four nice goals
Al-Nasr by the way, had a terrible season that time in Saudi.
So, as I said, friendlies are friendlies :)
