Chelsea’s summer signings included Christian Atsu, who came over from Porto during the summer. But what will this mean for Chelsea’s chances and how will it affect the team?

Midfielder Michael Essien has spoken out about how he, for one, is expecting big things from Atsu. Both players are from Ghana and play together for their national team so Essien is ideally placed to comment on his new team mate’s form.

Atsu has been watched carefully by many of the top clubs over the summer, including Liverpool and Tottenham before being signed by Chelsea. He went out on loan pretty much straight away to the Dutch league team Vitesse Arnhem, which Essien believes will have helped him develop before his return to Stamford Bridge.

According to team mates, Atsu is a level headed, calm player who should be a big asset to Chelsea in the future. As a winger, Atsu plays mostly on the right and is really quick. For such a young player, he has a keen eye for the goal and has plenty of experience in playing for the first team regularly thanks to his time at Porto and his loan out to the Netherlands.

Atsu joins the other new faces, also brought on board at Stamford Bridge by Mourinho, including Andre Schurrle, Willian and Samuel Eto’o, increasing people’s interest in Chelsea as a favourite to win the league.

Christian Atsu clocked up 20 league appearances for Porto and has amassed 16 caps for his country, so he definitely has the chops for high level play. He was signed when he was only 17 by Porto after being scouted in Ghana.

He is now part of a new look, burgeoning Chelsea that has everything in place to go to the top. His main strength is his speed and agility and he uses his skills to great effect by creating chances for his team mates. He does, however, need to improve his strike rate if he is ever going to be taken seriously in a central striker position.
