CK Vineeth of Kerala Blasters didn’t celebrate his goal in honour of those who lost lives in the plane crash which took lives of 19 Chapecoense players who were travelling to play Atletico Nacional in the final of the Copa Sudamerica in Columbia.
The Kerala Blasters striker, who already has scored three goals in three games, scored his fourth in the eighth minute of the crucial tie against Atletico de Kolkata, aided by a goalkeeping goof up by Atletico’s goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar.
The players from both sides honoured the families of people who lost their lives by observing a minute of silence ahead of the game. A truly commendable sign of respect and support from the Indian Super League family.
The incident which shook the footballing world broke through today morning, as the plane carrying 81 passengers crashed in an area outside the city of Medellin, and reports suggest that only five people have been rescued alive from the incident.
Soon condolences started pouring in from footballers from all around the planet, terrorised by the loss. Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea paid tribute to his friend Cleber Santana with whom he shared the locker room at Atletico Madrid (and was among one of many).
The Indian Super League game in itself is very crucial for both the teams, as the winner, almost surely, gets a place in the playoff places. Mumbai City FC have already had their place confirmed in the playoffs, and the Delhi Dynamos are very close to doing so with two games in hand.
Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters are both tied on eighteen points having played twelve games, with NorthEast United FC on fifteen points breathing down their necks. The former champions, Atletico de Kolkata though soon equalised with Scottish midfielder Stephen Pearson.
