The snow, along with the cold, really seemed to bother Norwich on the night as Liverpool hammered five past them. On a night which produced four different scorers and an own goal for Liverpool, it was Norwich who didn’t turn up. Henderson, who, for so long, has been criticized over his price tag and performances, started the rout as he rifled in the opener past Mark Bunn, the Norwich goalkeeper. His celebrations were ecstatic to say the least, as he vigorously pointed to the bench, maybe making a point to the manager, or whatever can be read into it. Liverpool were playing brilliant football and ten minutes after the first goal, a through ball by Lucas and a dummy by Sturridge let in Suarez who collecting the ball and scored with a beautiful left foot finish. Liverpool finished on a high in the first half.
In the second half, Liverpool seemed to get better as Norwich let in three more goals, much to the dismay of the visiting fans. There was some positive play by the Norwich team, but a first-time cross by Downing led to a tap-in for Sturridge as he became the first player since Ray Kennedy to score three in his first three games for Liverpool. And to make matters worse, a trademark shot from Gerrard soon made it four.
In between the periods of Liverpool domination, there were moments of opportunity for Norwich as well, as a free header in the first half which could have given Norwich the lead was off target. Then there was a strike by Holt which was cleared off the line by Wisdom in the second half. The chances were so few and far, that, at times, it seemed as if a training game was in play, rather than a full-fledged Premier League game.
Job done, Rodgers chose to bring on Sterling and Allen for Sturridge and Lucas. Norwich, though, were offering nothing going forward and soon enough Sterling used his pace to get behind the Norwich defense and took a shot on goal which was put in the Norwich goal by Ryan Bennett, as it rounded off Norwich’s woeful day.
Borini came on for the final 15 minutes as Henderson walked off to an Anfield reception. The game, already done and dusted, slowly petered out as Carragher’s hole in the sock and bootless hop provided the last bit of entertainment on a night in which everything went Liverpool’s way.
Liverpool will look to carry on this form into the next Premier league games as they could be season defining. They will be facing Arsenal and Manchester City, so a total of 4 points in those games would considerably strengthen Liverpool’s position in the table. A win against Arsenal will be welcome as it will give some momentum to their challenge for the the Champions’ League places.
