The inspiration behind this article was Mr.Vijay Amritraj. One fine day, as I was watching Murray play an inconsequential ATP match, the commentator remarked, “He is so talented, yet he always falls short of the mark. Performs well, but never so well as to win a Grand Slam”. Now, this got me thinking. Have I not read innumerable articles where Arsenal have been described similarly? Is he not like Arsenal? So here is a compilation of popular EPL clubs, and the corresponding tennis players, who are like the club itself, in terms of their history and performances. Any more additions from the readers would be helpful.
FOOTBALL CLUB TENNIS PLAYER
MANCHESTER UNITED ROGER FEDERER
Classy, very very popular and have amassed a lot of trophies. Have lost some of their aura of power, but still remain formidable opponents.
CHELSEA RAFAEL NADAL
Hard-working, and have the ability to grind out results. They have achieved remarkable success recently, and look on course to becoming the best in their field.
MANCHESTER CITY NOVAK DJOKOVIC
They have risen to prominence over the past few seasons, and have usurped their rivals to become no.1. They are formidable opponents, whose style and strength transforms their opponent into rubble.
ARSENAL ANDY MURRAY
Eye-catching, produce some exellent results, yet never manage to lay their hands on the elusive trophy. It’s been a long wait for their fans to see them on the champions’ podium. Consistently finish behind the likes of Manchester United (FedEx), Chelsea (Nadal), etc.
NEWCASTLE UNITED TOMAS BERDYCH
They have slowly risen from the depths to become big names in their respective sports. They are consistently performing well, and have a bright future ahead of them.
LIVERPOOL ANDY RODDICK
They have dramatically fallen from grace. They still maintain their reputation under the guise of past glories and cups, but have disappointed us fans greatly. Need to up their game if they want to compete with the big boys again.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR DAVID FERRER
Stylish, they have lived in the shadow of their compatriots for too long (Spurs-Chelsea, Ferrer-Nadal), but have finally come into their own with brilliant performances. Look to attack the opponent at every go, and not afraid to take risks.
EVERTON JO-WILFRIED TSONGA
You never quite know what to expect from them. Dazzling on their day, they can be frustratingly incompetent on some. But somehow they do create a flutter during the end of the season, and finish strongly.
