Brazilian side Corinthians failed in its bid to overturn a decision forcing the club to play its Copa Libertadores group matches behind closed doors.

In a statement released Tuesday, South American football’s governing body Conmebol said it had upheld a decision made last week to impose a two-month supporter ban.

Kevin Beltran Espada died last Wednesday after being struck by a flare during Corinthians’ 1-1 draw with San Jose in the Bolivian city of Oruro. A 17-year-old Corinthians fan has turned himself into Brazilian authorities after admitting to letting off the flare on national television.

Twelve Corinthians supporters remain in police custody in Bolivia and face possible homicide charges.

The Brazilian club, which is the defending Copa Libertadores champion, will face Colombia’s Millionarios at home Wednesday.
