Some Facts about the Copa America Final
Presently Copa America is a quadrennial tournament, ie. it recurs every four years. The tournament was held for two consecutive years in 2015 and in 2016. The 2016 edition of the tournament was organized to commemorate 100 years of the formation of the South American Football Association (CONMEBOL). This is the 46th edition of the Copa America organised by CONMEBOL.
Both the 44th and the 45th edition of the tournament saw Chile and Argentina reach the Copa America Final. Coincidentally both these final games ended in a 0-0 draw at the end of full-time as well as extra-time. Both these Copa America Final matches went down to penalties and resulted in Chile winning both of them.
In the 2015 Copa America Final, Matías Fernández took the first penalty for Chile and scored. Chile was successful in converting all their penalties to goals, where Argentina managed to score only their first penalty through Lionel Messi. Alexis Sanchez scored the winning penalty for Chile making the final penalties score 4-1.
The 2016 edition saw both these teams square-off against each other once again in the Copa America Final. Both Chile and Argentina were reduced to 10 men before the final whistle. Chile again took the first penalty. Everyone except Arturo Vidal scored for Chile. On the other hand, Lionel Messi and Lucas Biglia missed their penalties for Argentina. The final score on penalties was 4-2. Fransisco Silva scored the winning penalty for Chile.
