Copa Libertadores: Newell's eliminate Boca on penalties

Rosario (Argentina) - Newell’s Old Boys eliminated 10-man Boca Juniors from the Copa Libertadores football with a dramatic 10-9 penalty shootout victory in their quarterfinal second leg.

The result of the all-Argentine duel at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium here on Wednesday sets up a semifinal clash for Newell’s against the winners of the match between Tijuana of Mexico and Colombia’s Independiente Santa Fe, reports Xinhua.

Former Villarreal and Argentina midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme squandered Boca’s first spot-kick, followed by missed attempts from Matias Caruzzo, Nahuel Zarate and Juan Manuel Martinez.

Marcos Caceres, Maximiliano Urruti and Horacio Orzan were off target for Newell’s before former Liverpool winger Maxi Rodriguez converted the winning penalty from his team’s 13th attempt.

Boca defender Clemente Rodriguez was sent off on the hour after a second yellow card for verbally abusing referee German Delfino.

The 0-0 scoreline after normal time replicated the result at Boca’s Bombonera stadium a week earlier. Under Conmebol rules, the match was decided on penalties with no extra time.

In Wednesday’s other match, Olimpia of Paraguay defeated Brazil’s Fluminense 2-1 and on aggregate to advance to the last four.
