To think that Luka Modri? wouldn’t raise transfer interest this summer would be naive or almost credulous. For once , he’s been at the “heart” of the Spurs midfield not just metaphorically speaking but literally too , ever since Arry moved him inside for a more central role. Even though plenty of adulation has gone to the likes of Gareth Bale who as a player has really come of age now or the “bargain of the summer” arguably in Rafael Van der Vaart , Modri? has still left a mark in the minds of Spurs fans who voted him as the “Supporters Clubs Player of the Season” .
With today’s announcement that Paul Scholes has retired, the speculation that Man United will look towards Modri? as his ideal replacement, has suddenly gained even more momentum, though talk of a £25m price tag seems rather light, to the tune of at least ten million or so Spurs would think. With United realizing the worth of a player who can actually keep hold of the ball in tight situations and navigate through with his “tippy-tappy” moves or so to put it after the mauling Barcelona gave them , will be desperate to get their man to add that much required flair in the United midfield. Chelsea on the other hand aren’t too far behind and even Post Carlo , seem quite as much as interested in Modri? as United are ,after their not so great a season finally coming to and end with a loss at Goodison Park. With Mr Abramovich’s purse wanting to cut loose ever so desperately , you could very well see the Croat in a Blues Jersey next season.
Modri? himself has always dismissed any transfer talk and claimed he was very happy at White Hart Lane, but in comments today, whilst on international duty with Croatia, it is easy to interpret his words as a strong hint as his desire to move on, should Spurs receive a decent offer, as he said:
‘Everybody wants to know what will happen with me. I’m trying to stay calm as my national team has a really important match coming. So I will tell you the same as all ways – my club status is the same as it was before.
‘But of course, if there will be an offer which will be good for Tottenham and for me also, then a transfer is of course possible.
‘That doesn’t mean that I’m bothered with leaving Tottenham – I’m not thinking about that every hour and every minute. I’m happy at White Hart Lane – my status is great, the fans like me and I do have everything I need.
‘But then again – when you experience playing in Champions League, you want to keep playing in this tournament.’
Let me make it clear, I love Spurs more. One day, he won’t be here. Spurs will. And so will I. That solid fact underpins all the dopey fanboyism that’s about to gush forth. I will also try avoid expressions like ‘gush forth’, promise.
To put it in a simpler way , from the likes of Gascoigne to Hoddle , Spurs have had quite a lot of flair players with that gushing arrogance and audaciousness to a lot of other cliches that are no less true for being over used. I think anyone who follows football or watches Spurs play would know the quality of the lil Croat so I won’t go to rhapsodical lengths about his qualities, or tactical analysis of his importance to the team. The thought of Modri? leaving WHL would be a an agony blow if not a straight up punch in the stomach considering he’d be key if Spurs need to get back in Europe (not talking about that joke the Europa League is) and bring back the those Glory Glory European nights back to White Hart Lane.
Talk today is that Spurs could be looking forward to Dinamo Zagreb’s Croating playmaker in Milan Badelj in a deal worth around £9m, whilst Harry could still be looking at a more direct player such as Charlie Adam, should Luka be sold.
Harry has again reiterated that none of his big names will be sold this summer with Chairman Daniel Levy assuring the same back, however much clubs might offer, but does this as usual depend on the players own wishes and demands, however long a deal they may be on? Luka Modric may well be happy to stay at Spurs, at least in the short term, but how often is a player ‘happy‘ until that offer is made, then suddenly even the most content player suddenly becomes restless.
Once any touted player is seemingly available or restless, there is the potential of someone like City or Chelsea looking to make a statement signing and would any of us be surprised if either of those offered silly money in straight cash or part player exchange, making Luka’s value to nearer £50m and however much Spurs claim they wouldn’t consider selling, could they honestly resist at that money, especially if the players head was turned??? Could Levy possibly be looking to cash in on his “gem” of a player of maybe try bringing back Berbatov to the Lane in a part exchange plus cash considering how the Spurs strikers failed them miserably last season???
A move or not , Modri? will certainly be keeping thousands of Spurs fan biting their fingernails till the transfer window ends. Time for all you Spurs supporters to sit back and be ready for one hell of a Transfer window.
