What’s the story?
Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly asked Real Madrid to sign Bernardo Silva from AS Monaco in the summer. The player was a target for Barcelona, and he was ready to join them.
However, now with his idol Ronaldo wanting him at the Bernabeu, things have changed. The Ligue 1 star has informed the club that he would only move to Madrid should they sell him, report Diario Gol.
In case you didn’t know...
Bernardo Silva is one of the stars for AS Monaco in their surge to the top of the Ligue 1 table. He joined them from Benfica in 2015 and has been in their first team ever since.
The Portuguese club signed him up at the tender age of eight. He then progressed to make it into the under 19 squad, followed by the Benfica B team and then to the first team.
The heart of the matter
Reports last month suggested that Lionel Messi had recommended Bernardo Silva to the Barcelona board and that the Catalan side were in talks with AS Monaco for him. The Ligue 1 side are reportedly demanding €50 million for the winger, for whom they paid just €15.75 million in 2015.
This is not the first time Real Madrid are hijacking another club's move for the Monaco star. Manchester United were in talks for the player in January, and as Madrid could not sign any players that time, they asked the player not to move and remain at the French club until the summer.
However, with James Rodriguez deciding to stay, Los Blancos have cooled their interest in the player. The Madrid side were more interested in signing Silva's teammates, Kylian Mbappe.
Now, with Barcelona beginning talks for the player, Madrid are back in the hunt for the player. They are planning to get Ronaldo to speak to him directly to convince the player to move to Bernabeu according to the Spanish publication, Diario Gol.
What’s next?
Real Madrid and Barcelona are likely to submit a bid for the player in the summer. It will be a tug-of-war for the player, and it would be interesting to see what Barcelona have to offer him.
Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Chelsea are also interested in signing him and so, it won’t be as easy as it looks. The price of the player is bound to go up because of these top clubs being interested in him.
Author’s Take
Bernardo Silva is a brilliant winger, and it is not a surprise that the Spanish giants are after him. He would be a perfect fit at Madrid to replace Rodriguez and at the age of just 22, he is yet to reach his prime.
