Cristiano Ronaldo turned out to be the last minute saviour for Portugal as his stoppage time header defeated Denmark 1-0 in their Group I European qualifiers.
The Seleccao, who came from the back of a 1-0 defeat against Albania, travelled to Copenhagen on Tuesday to take on the Danes in the second round of the qualifiers. Both the teams looked positive while going forward with two great chances on each end in the first half – Ronaldo’s effort saved by Danish keeper Simon Kjaer while Michael Krohn-Dehli came closest to scoring as he hit the woodwork.
The second half was less eventful in terms of creating opportunities. Ronaldo had a below par game compared to his high standards and received a yellow card for a sloppy foul on Pierre Hojbjerg in added time.
It looked as if both the sides were heading for a stalemate after a mediocre performance from Ronaldo and co. But the deadlock was broken in the 95th th minute as Ricardo Quaresma delivered a good cross into the keeper’s territory which was met by the Real Madrid attacker ahead of Kjaer, netting the only goal of the game and giving coach Fernando Santos his first win as their coach.
Here is the video of that goal.
