Displeasure surrounding some of the winners of the Spanish Professional Football League (LFP) awards held recently has led to suggestions to make the voting known to the public, but LFP president Javier Tebas thinks that it is far from a good idea.
"I'm not going to bring out a thing that the players.. when you talk with the captains, it shouldn't go public. Because I think that the people must vote freely. If it were published, they'd say: 'This is a friend of mine, I'm with him in the national team, I see him in the other one, this one is a right...’, I'm sure of it.”
He also created controversy by claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo, who was awarded the La Liga Player of the Year, courtesy of 31 goals for Real Madrid, wouldn’t have won the award had the voting been public. "This is just my opinion. If the voting were open, Cristiano Ronaldo wouldn't win," Tebas stated.
Tebas’ comments have come following the criticism of the awards by Diego Godin and Enrique Cerezo, illustrating the overwhelming disappointment of the Atletico players about the fact that they enjoyed almost no recognition for their achievements despite winning the league last season.
