Real Madrid superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos have urged the club not to sell Argentina winger Angel Di Maria according to the Spanish media.

Ronaldo and Ramos, both powerful figures in the dressing room, are said to have visited President Florentino Perez in a last ditch effort to prevent the sale of the 26-year-old after the side 1-1 draw against local rivals Atletico. The former Benfica winger played the last 10 minutes of the match even getting a stamding ovation while coming onto the pitch.

Di Maria has been linked with a move away from the club all summer with possible desinations likely to be English giants Manchester United or French champions Paris Saint-Germain. The Champions of Europe have made considerable attacking additions to an already glittering squad with the purchases of World Cup winner Toni Kroos and Colombian hero James Rodriguez.

With last season’s buy Isco already on the sidelines there have been questions over if the World Cup finalist will get playing time this season. He finished last season with 22 assists – 13 more than Ronaldo, 10 more than James and 6 more than Bale.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti earlier this week had admitted that the player might leave but was adamant that he would be eligible for selection in all of the club’s matches.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone had singled him out as Los Blancos’ best player over the likes of Ronaldo and Bale after the two sides met in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

“He’s the best player they have,” Simeone said.

“[Di Maria] is the player most likely to create openings in the opposition half,”

The club sold German superstar Mesut Ozil last season after the world record signing of Welsh winger Gareth Bale.
