Yes, you read that right. An hour before Crystal Palace played Arsenal in a Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium in north London, they had actually named Karim Benzema in their matchday squad.
The tweet has since been deleted but it did not go by unnoticed. Screenshots were promptly taken and shared online.
If you were on Twitter at the time, you may have glanced through the lineup. It’s a fairly straightforward starting XI. Hennessey, Ward, Dann, Delaney, Souaré, Puncheon, Jedinak, Cabaye, Ledley, Bolasie, and Wickham.
But if you took a closer look at the substitutes, you would have seen Speroni, Mariappa, Kelly, Lee, Sako, Campbell and – wait for it – Benzema!
As fans scratched their heads, the tweet was quickly deleted and replaced with the actual list of substitutes as Benzema gave way to Emmanuel Adebayor.
Of course, Twitter had a good time trolling not only Crystal Palace but also Benzema. The irony of the French striker making only the bench was also not lost on some fans.
