Daniel Sturridge could miss the Olympics with meningitis

Chelsea v Wigan Athletic - Premier League

Sturridge would be devastated to miss the Olympic games after missing out on England’s Euro 2012 squad.

Tonight it has emerged that Chelsea, and Team GB striker Daniel Sturridge has contracted suspected meningitis, and could miss out on the London Olympics.

It is potentially a devastating news for the young Chelsea forward, who many had said would get a starting role in Team GB in his preferred position as centre forward. It had also been described as a ‘shop window’ for the unsettled Chelsea man, in a bid to show his capabilities on the world stage.

Sturridge has received many critics this season, and I know officials that are part of the Sturridge camp, were eager for Danny to show his worth and earn a starting place in the Champions League winners’ squad.

Various reports tonight suggest that Daniel Sturridge will now need to undergo a serious of tests to determine the seriousness of the problem. It has been stated that early signs are showing it is only a mild case of meningitis.

Team GB’s 18-man squad are set to meet up this weekend, along with manager Stuart Pearce, who is a known admirer of Sturridge. Pearce will have up until 25th July to decide whether he needs to replace this young starlet, depending on the test results.

It could potentially be a huge blow for Pearce’s young side, but could open the door for Jordan Rhodes or Wilfied Zaha, two young strikers on standby.

With England hit by injury problems before the Euro 2012, everyone involved in the setup will be hoping this does not become a repeat of that situation for Team GB.

Everyone knows how serious meningitis can be, but early signs show positive results and here’s hope that not only does he recover fast, but also walks out on the 26th July to represent Great Britain in the Olympic games.
