Manchester United defender Jonny Evans claims that team-mate Danny Welbeck can become “one of the best players” in the world.
“I think that if he adds a few goals to his game, people will start saying he’s the best player in the world. If you look at his overall play, the things he can with the ball are unbelievable. Then there are the things he does off-the-ball for the team as well. The shifts that he puts in are fantastic,” said Evans in an interview with the Daily Mirror.
Welbeck had been playing out wide under Sir Alex Ferguson and only managed to score two goals last season, but was restored in his favourite role by David Moyes.
The forward reacted by scoring a brace against Swansea in the season opener.
“He didn’t play at center-forward that many times last season. I don’t know that stats but when you have players like Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa – who was playing off the front – and Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez as well, it was maybe harder for him to get as much game time as he wanted,” the Manchester United defender added.
Evans himself has been facing competitions from the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for a place in the starting eleven.
However, he stated that the competitions for places will only benefit the club and is something he relished.
