Why David Beckham is smarter than Mickey Mouse

David Beckham

In an unusual turn of events, David Beckham has been making the headlines. The former Manchester United youth team player and Robbie Savage team-mate has the option to launch an MLS franchise and it looks like he’s going to be making a team. Apparently he asked friend Will Smith where to choose and unable to locate ‘Getting Jiggy with it’ on the map he settled for Miami.

I would expect Dave to create a team in his own image, so you can expect a loyal female fanbase when all the hotties trot out in a kit that may well not consist of much more than pants.
We’ve had a lot of discussions about maverick owners who come in and don’t know anything about the game You won’t get that with Dave – he can draw on his first-hand experience of the game when building his side. There is a danger that 11 midfielders who don’t build their game on pace and put a lot of time into set piece delivery might not lead to a balanced side, but I’ve heard it said the MLS is a Mickey Mouse league. If that is indeed the case, it’s a shrewd move by Dave to pick Florida where Disney HQ is. No coincidence that he’s spent time in LA, Paris and now Florida, Dave clearly has been building a relationship with the league president.

I wish him the best of luck because it is not easy trying to put a new team together. I started a Power League side in November at it is a nightmare. I hope he’s prepared for some last minute cancellations and having to start in a very low, rough league where fat old men just spent the whole game intimidating his boys and fouling.
Laudrup
A man who needs a new club and probably wishes he could make one is Michael Laudrup. Following a series of very disappointing results the Dane was given his marching orders. He was unhappy that nobody clearly explained to him why he was on his way out, and I sympathise.
I remember having the best two seasons of my life in the ’90s, and I was especially in form for my native San Marino. I was a lynchpin in our qualification campaign so you can imagine my chagrin when I wasn’t named in our World Cup squad. I was fuming and there was a bit of a falling out. I was hurt and angry and confused. Those emotions faded but they never fully went away. It was only years later when me and the bossman talked openly and properly about what happened that I understood and then felt better. Turns out we hadn’t qualified.
