Manchester United keeper, David De Gea, is the next victim of the deadly Football Leaks saga that is threatening to unravel all of Europe's top athlete's contracts with clubs. The Spaniard was on the verge of joining Real Madrid in 2015's summer transfer window but for various reasons, stayed back in England with the move falling through.
Football Leaks – who have so far leaked the contracts of Anthony Martial, Gareth Bale, Mesut Ozil and Falcao and Toni Kroos – have gold hold of De Gea's contract and have released it on their website.
David De Gea was desperate to move to Real Madrid from Manchester United with the help of superagent Jorge Mendes but some final minute delays turned the deal on its head during the dying moments of the transfer window. Manchester United insisted that it wasn't their fault and that Real Madrid were the ones responsible for the delay but the Spanish clubs defended themselves by insisting they had proof that all the files they sent to England were on time.
Nonetheless, David De Gea, signed on with Manchester United for four more years to put this whole transfer saga behind him.
Getting to the contract, chunks of major information continues to spurt through with the biggest one being that the former Atletico Madrid would earn nearly €12m-a-year at the Santiago Bernabeu of which major parts of it would be bonuses if De Gea left Old Trafford to join Los Blancos that summer.
With his base salary set at €11m-a-year and with the addition of bonuses Real Madrid would add on based on achievements, the Spaniard's total cost to the club could have worked out to almost €86m in total – given that De Gea's contract was for a reported duration of six years.
In any case of the termination of contract, the soon-to-be Spanish number one would be liable to a mammoth €500m compensation fee.
We should learn more about the contract as we decipher more but until then, here are the tweets with the important pages of De Gea's contract:
