The only Manchester United player who has impressed everyone from the start of the season is David De Gea. After the pre-season tour in United States, he was brilliant at his position proving all the critics wrong. With all the injuries the team has had to deal with, the only man who saved the sinking boat of United is De Gea. Even with poor defensive show from the defenders, United have won many matches just because of De Gea’s brilliance.
His most notable performance came against Everton at Old Trafford when De Gea denied Leighton Baines a goal from the penalty spot among other important saves. The 24-year-old admitted that “it was one of the best game of my career.” Manager Louis van Gaal was equally impressed with his No.1 labelling his performance as ‘fantastic.’
In both the matches against Manchester City and Chelsea, De Gea put in top-notch performances. However, his good show was not enough for his team to secure the three points.
In their match against City, he had to end up in the losing side with 10-men. During the Chelsea match, he blocked Eden Hazard’s shot which kept United in the game ending in a 1-1 draw.
Crucial penalty save against Everton
It was no surprise that De Gea was voted United’s Player of the Month for October and he admits he’s in the form of his career. "I feel very good now," he says. "I feel strong, confident and I am probably in my best form.”
"It’s important for me to train hard and try to improve in every session so I can maintain the same level of fitness and concentration. That’s my aim," he adds.
He was adjudged as the man of the match during United's 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford. He made a total of 8 saves in the game, not allowing the opponents to convert a single chance to a goal throughout the match. Most of the shots were on target and all of the Liverpool strikers including Mario Balotelli failed to score again. Even with the inexperienced defensive line and injury woes Manchester United have had, he have done a great job to help United reach the 3rd spot in the Premier League table.
Without his impressive form, we can’t barely even imagine where United would be standing right now! It is to be accepted that the Spaniard has won the Red Devils more than 10 points in the previous games, and if this run has to continue, we could soon see him become Spain’s No. 1 while replacing Real Madrid’s legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Even Manchester United may go on to win the trophy just with his form if their defence is slightly improved.
In 17 games, he has made a total of 50 saves and 5 clean sheets which are outstanding numbers for a 24-year-old keeper. The former Atletico Madrid man have gone through tough years at Manchester United, but that seems well-worthy now. When he arrived at Manchester United he was criticised for his poor positioning and reflexes and now he have made all the critics wrong with his hard work and passion towards the game.
Now he is considered as a huge wall of Manchester United which is not easy to break. With his ever so improving reflexes and better judgement of positioning, there is no doubt that he will be the world’s best in the near future.
Sir Alex Ferguson was so right in buying him as a replacement Edwin Van Der Sar. Hope he continues in this form.
All the best David De Gea!
