Manchester United boss David Moyes is doing himself no favors after the Scot has controversially stated that his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson would have done no better with the current squad at his disposal.

“If Sir Alex was here it would be difficult for him as well,” said Moyes.

“It could have been the case no matter what this season, but it has been so un-Man United, which is why we have to look to continue a policy of building, improving, getting better and that’s what we’ll try and do.”

The comments will not win him any fans and with some fans already planning to fly a banner plane over Old Trafford during United’s Premier League game against Aston Villa on Saturday, the latest comments from Moyes could only increase the fans’ ire towards him.

United are struggling in the Premier League in 7th position, 18 points off leaders Chelsea with 7 games to go. The title defence never really took off and United’s Champions League qualification hopes are effectively over too with the team 12 points behind 4th placed Arsenal.

After 31 games in the Premier League last season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, minus the £65 million duo of Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata, were 26 points better off than Moyes’ side.

Moyes pointed out that defenders Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and midfielders Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs being in the twilight of their careers was one of the factors in the team having a well below par season.

“People are aware there is a squad that is ageing, so I think it would have been a tough season for whoever was in charge of Manchester United this year,” he said.
