Manchester United have been handed some welcome news on the injury front, with manager David Moyes confirming that the toe injury that striker Wayne Rooney out of the Red Devils’ 4-0 win over Newcastle may not be severe enough to rule him out of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter final second leg with Bayern Munich.
United drew the first leg 1-1 at Old Trafford last week, but Rooney picked up a toe injury during the game that has threatened to stop him featuring in the second leg.
The England forward missed the weekend win over Newcastle, but has been working on his fitness over the weekend and could return in Germany.
“We have worked him hard on the bike and in the swimming pool, Friday and today [Saturday] and we will give him every opportunity to be fit,” Moyes told reporters in the aftermath of the Newcastle win.
Rooney picked up the injury in the first leg, but carried on and played the full 90 minutes. He was brought down by Bastian Schweinsteiger late on in a challenge that saw the German sent off, but Moyes confirmed that he had sustained the injury prior to that incident, saying: “I didn’t think it was in that challenge, I thought it was done prior to that.”
While United won comfortable in Rooney’s absence, the England forward is likely to be key to their hopes of going through, particularly as they are already without fellow forward Robin Van Persie and attacking midfielder Juan Mata through injury and ineligibility respectively.
UPDATE: Wayne Rooney took part in the team’s open training session this morning, and the chances of him playing against Bayern Munich are pretty high.
