Manchester United manager David Moyes has explained Wayne Rooney’s absence from the victory over Norwich, saying the England forward has an abductor injury.
He has poured cold water on suggestions he could be missing for a while however, claiming that he expects his talisman to be fit for the visit of Spurs on New Years’ Day.
United laboured a 1-0 win over struggling Norwich on Saturday in his absence, following an inspired showing from him that saw them overcome a two-goal deficit against Hull to claim victory, but Moyes is confident that he will be able to call upon his striker once again as a potentially tougher opposition in Tottenham come to Old Trafford.
Moyes said, “Wayne was missing because he’s got an abductor injury in his groin. He missed the Stoke game because of the same injury.
“I think if we hadn’t got so many games and we could just give him a couple of weeks to recover properly I think he’d be fine, but I expect him to be OK for the next game against Tottenham.”
Moyes also claimed that Robin Van Persie is also nearing a return to the side having missed the past couple of weeks and is looking forward to having his two star strikers available to him at the same time.
“Robin has started some light training and he might not be too far away as well. We have not had them (Van Persie & Rooney) as a partnership very often and we are looking forward to having them together.”
