Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has expressed his gratitude at being given the captain’s armband for the first time in their win against Ipswich Town on Wednesday, ESPN reports. United are through to the next round of the Capital One Cup courtesy of Martial, Depay and Pereira’s goals which gave them the win against Ipswich.
The Spanish goalkeeper was handed the armband following Wayne Rooney’s substitution. Michael Carrick, who’s the club’s vice-captain, was on the bench and Chris Smalling had already been withdrawn before Rooney.
The Red Devils’ new signing Bastian Schweinsteiger was brought on from the bench for Rooney and the Germany captain immediately passed the armband to De Gea, who wore it for the remainder of the match. The Spanish goalkeeper has expressed his delight and honour to have donned the captain’ s armband for the first time ever since his arrival in 2011.
"Great win yesterday!" De Gea wrote on Twitter.
"Let's think about our next rivals and keep improving. I'm proud to wear this armband! # MUFC".
The 24-year-old came agonisingly close to leaving Old Trafford and joining Spanish giant Real Madrid, but the deal broke down on the later stages of the deadline day due to miscommunication problems.
De Gea has been left out of the United squad for their first six fixtures of the season, with manager Louis Van Gaal concerned about the goalkeeper's state of mind during the transfer window.
Ever since signing his improved contract renewal, the Spanish goalkeeper has been played four times for the Red Devils. De Gea seems to have finally settled as we saw some glimpses of his last season's stellar form against Southampton where he made crucial saves. He has kept his first clean sheet of the season in the Capital One Cup win over Ipswich Town.
Young Pereira continues to impress LVG
Rooney opened United’s account against Ipswich before teenagers Anthony Martial and Andreas Periera sealed the victory. Youngster Pereira has impressed Van Gaal during the US pre-season tour with a string of fine displays and he has continued to do so by scoring a stunning free kick.
Pereira has thanked his teammate Juna Mata on Twitter for allowing to take the free kick.
"I asked Juan for the ball and he gave it to me," the Brazil under-20 international told MUTV.
"We've been practising together and he trusted me.”
"It's very special for me to score my first goal, a free kick at the Stretford End as well. It's just like a dream come true. I'm very happy for my family, for impressing my manager and doing well for my club."
