Newcastle have made a prompt move within the first week of the January transfer window. The club announced earlier today that French international right back Mathieu Debuchy has joined the team from the North-East after penning a five and a half deal with the Magpies. Newcastle stated the transfer amount as undisclosed, but the deal is thought to be in the region of £5million.
The Frenchman joins Newcastle from Lille where he won both the Ligue 1 title and the domestic cup in 2010–11. The Frenchman was on the radar for Newcastle throughout the summer, but an impressive Euro 2012 saw them being priced out of a deal. Debuchy joins a strong French contingent at Newcastle, which includes his very close friend Yohan Cabaye.
Debuchy said after joining: “It is great to become a Newcastle United player.
“After many great years at Lille I felt I was ready for a new challenge, and cannot wait to play for such a big club in the best league in the world.
“I hope I can bring something fresh to the team and help us get up to the highest possible position in the Premier League this season.
“I will give everything for this club.”
Newcastle will hope Debuchy’s presence will help shore up a defence that has conceded 13 goals in their last 3 games, while providing flair on the right flank going forward.
