Sydney, Sep 19 (IANS) - Italian football star Alessandro Del Piero has been handed the captaincy of Australia’s leading football club Sydney FC for the 2013-14 A-League season.
Sydney FC coach Frank Farina announced Wednesday that Del Piero would lead the team for the upcoming season, replacing Terry McFlynn, who has been at the helm for three seasons, reports Xinhua.
“This is a great honour for me to be given the captaincy of one of Australia and Asia’s biggest clubs,” said Del Piero.
“It’s a very proud moment for me and I will give everything to help the club win the A-League Championship this season. I hope supporters get behind the team and all together we can be successful.”
Farina said the 38-year-old Italian World Cup winner was a little bit hesitant in the beginning when he first received the news.
“The hesitancy was out of respect for Terry,” Farina later clarified.
“That’s just the man in summary. The greatest people I’ve met, the greatest players I’ve met, are the most humble.”
