Borussia Dortmund have finally made the official announcement on Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave the club at the end of the season, but were Manchester United the reason for the German manage to make this decision?
Klopp's team currently find themselves sitting at the bottom half of the Bundesliga table, which is unusual as Dortmund is a team that is known for challenging the title. In his time at Dortmund, Klopp has won two League titles, and one DFB-Pokal Cup.
At the press conference, Klopp said, "I always said in that moment where I believe I am not the perfect coach anymore for this extraordinary club I will say so. I chose this time to announce it because in the last years some player decisions were made late and you couldn't react.”
The Bild who were known for breaking the news of Mario Gotze leaving Dortmund to join Bayern Munich, reported that Klopp had requested for his contract to be terminated, and had also unsuccessfully asked for permission to talk to an unnamed English club in April 2014.
Klopp was the fans’ favourite to replace David Moyes, who was sacked from United on April 22. Klopp at the time though was focused on staying at Dortmund. Klopp said at the time: "Man United is a great club and I feel very familiar with their wonderful fans, but my commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable."
Some of the other managers who were linked with Manchester United at the time were Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti and former Juventus manager Antonio Conte.
