Atletico Madrid were dealt a severe blow to their La Liga and UEFA Champions League hopes when star striker Diego Costa suffered a tibia injury in a La Liga match against Getafelast night. The Spanish striker had to be substituted after he crashed into the post seconds after giving Atletico Madrid a 2-0 lead. He was stretchered off with a problem in the knee at the 85th minute during the game on Sunday.
The 25-year old Spanish striker had a huge cut on his leg and was in pain as he made way for Cristian Rodriguez. Atletico Madrid was then quick enough to downplay the significance of the injury.
The club’s official twitter account stated:
Which roughly translates to: ” Fortunately, Diego Costa only has a wound after crashing into the upright.”
” Costa is fine, he is happy. He has a cut, but it’s not a big deal”, added Atletico’s head coach Diego Simeone.
Costa had won a penalty after being fouled by Getafe player Angel Lafita but then failed to convert the penalty which also saw a rival fan distracting him from behind the goal. The Spanish international then scored in the game making up for his mistake and scoring his 26th goal of the season, after which he was stretchered off.
Atletico Madrid returned to the top of La Liga table after Sunday’s win and are three points ahead of second placed Real Madrid.
