Dimitar Berbatov - Should Arsenal sign this ex-Manchester United star?

Keep Calm And Pass The Ball To Me - Berbatov

We are talking about Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov. With the Bulgarian reportedly looking to leave Fulham, Arsenal could pick up the seasoned Premier League striker for little money.

Berbatov

Although it seems like an unlikely destination for Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov, he has recently been linked with a move to London rivals Arsenal. Although the Bulgarian was linked with a switch to Serie A, his antics with Fiorentina over the summer has put any Italian team off wanting to negotiate with him, which has supposedly left Arsenal as front runners for the former Tottenham Hotspur man’s signature. Berbatov had scored more than 200 goals in his professional career.

This seems unlikely, as Arsene Wenger has always been passionate about developing youth, and with Yaya Sanogo currently occupying the Arsenal bench most games, there wouldn’t be a great need for Berbatov, but a move for him wouldn’t be completely pointless. They would be getting an experienced Premier League striker for virtually nothing, and this will let them have a different option in attack, and would also let them rest the likes of Giroud in cup games and also when they meet smaller sides in the Premier League.

Though a bid for the ex-Manchester United striker is only logical if they should lose Nicklas Bendtner. There is no need to have 2 strikers of similar style, stature and talent on the bench, as it will just lead to one, or both of them being unhappy and never getting a game, something Arsene would rather avoid.

With silky skills and a shed load of experience, Berbatov would be useful to almost any Premier League club, but mostly the mid-table sides and relegation candidates, and it is those clubs that should be looking at bringing him in this winter window, not a club who are looking to go the whole way and win the Premier League, as Berbatov is no longer good enough for a club of Arsenal’s size or ambitions.

So the simple answer is no, Arsenal should not make a move for the former Bayer Leverkusen man in January, as it will be another name on the wage bill that they do not need and will also take up a space that should have been filled with a striker that can bring more to the Emirates Stadium table than experience. Even if Nicklas Bendtner should move on in January, another young striker should be signed and given a chance, not someone entering the twilight of their career.
