Downpour floods Kiev's Euro 2012 fan zone

Kiev – Heavy rain flooded the Euro 2012 fan zone in the centre of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, Ukrainian TV channel 1+1 has reported.

A heavy storm Wednesday evening caused water to collect in temporary buildings on the fan zone site after drains were unable to cope.

The fan zone is situated on and around the city’s central Maidan square, where protestors gathered in 2004 in protest at the disputed election of Viktor Yanukovich as president, which was later overturned by the courts.

A protest camp remains on the square, comprised of supporters of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

During the tournament, organisers hope that the Kiev fan zone will host tens of thousands of Ukrainian and foreign fans watching matches on big screens.
