Winning the game against Chelsea would have meant the world to West Brom who’ve improved significantly under Roy Hodgson, but the wounded animal, Chelsea roared at the Hawthorns and unleashed their fury of silverware heartbreaks on the Baggies with three magical goals, ending up 3-1 victors from the match. Didier Drogba, who has been sidelined to the bench recently to give room for big-money signing, Fernando Torres, came to the fore on the day as he scored one goal, played a part in the other two and helped ease the pressure on Carlo Ancelotti. This was how the match progressed.
The appetizer goal of the day
As the game began it was West Brom who had looked the more dangerous side despite Chelsea possessing a lot of the ball. In the 17th minute, Peter Odemwingie scored via a beautiful chip over Petr Cech to record the club’s first goal against Chelsea in 4 games, thus giving the Blues an early scare. As the Hawthorns crowd rejoiced and began to ponder the possibility of another heartbreak for Chelsea with Odemwingie’s opener, Chelsea shut such fears out by coming back strongly into the match.
Triple Treat for Chelsea
The Blues weren’t panic-stricken for too long as Didier Drogba found the equaliser just three minutes later. Florent Malouda sent a great ball across the goal keeper but the clearance from Nicky Shore landed right in the path of the Ivorian front man who made no mistake in slotting the ball home. Immediately after the equaliser, in the 25th minute, Drogba was allowed to walk near the goal for a shot which was saved by Scott Carson. But once again lack of concentration at the back for West Brom allowed Salomon Kalou to tap in from close range. The scoreline stood 2-1 and the comeback was complete but the Blues were yet to stop steamrolling past their opposition. Chelsea looked destined to widen their lead before the stroke of half time and deservedly so, in the 44th minute, Frank Lampard made the Blues proud with a shot ten yards away from goal.
Torres still the ‘sitting duck’
It was a good day at the office for Chelsea who held on to the three first half goals to end up victors but the only blemish on the day was the inability of big money signing Fernando Torres to break his goal duck despite playing 12 games for Chelsea. There has been a lot of pressure on Torres lately as the Spaniard has failed to the opportunities provided by Ancelotti, who has favoured him over in-form Drogba lately. At the Hawthorns, Torres came on as a substitute and almost got himself a goal in the 83rd minute when he put one in the back of the net, only for it to be ruled off side. Barring that, the Spaniard looked lazy and sloppy in finishing and most definitely not a man worth 50 million pounds or even worthy of replacing Didier Drogba, who showed his class yet again.
After their midweek Champions League exit Chelsea could be forgiven for feeling a little sorry for themselves going in to this match but they picked themselves up quickly as West Brom could have caused them problems, especially with the home crowd behind them. It was a truly deserved victory for the Blues which gave them 3 points and with a few more wins, they can definitely seal automatic qualification for the Champions League next season by finishing third or even second in the league.
