When Sir Alex Ferguson declared his decision to retire, nightmares of millions across the world came true. It was inevitable, but no one saw it coming. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson finally retired from the beautiful game after a breathtaking 26-year spell at the club. To be fair, Manchester United’s modern day face is all thanks to Sir Alex Ferguson. He has played the most vital role in making Manchester united the powerhouse it is today.
Manchester United’s glory days date back to the time when Sir Matt Busby was in-charge of the club. He was also a Scot, just like Sir Alex. He had only one dream in his mind, and that was to gain European glory for Manchester United. The Munich air disaster did injure the wings of his dreams, but didn’t completely destroy them. Ten years after the infamous incident, Sir Matt Busby led his team out of the tunnel at the Wembley, London, against a strong Benfica team – and his dream was fulfilled. Manchester United were the champions of Europe in 1968.
In 1986, another Scot was chosen to lead Manchester United. Success was to come, but it took time. Sir Alex was on the fringes of his job at times, but he started to deliver, and then never stopped. He is the modern day image of the club. All that Manchester United is today, the club and the fans owe it to one man – and that is Sir Alex.
2012-13 season was the last season for Sir Alex at Manchester United. Although he will take up director role and club ambassador role at Manchester United from the 2013-14 season onwards, it won’t be the same. The club has appointed yet another Scot, David Moyes from Everton, but it won’t be the same.
With the arrival of David Moyes, Manchester United’s equilibrium has gotten unstable. The club’s assistant Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have also parted ways with the club. Star striker Wayne Rooney is believed to be troubled by the idea of playing under his former coach, and he too has submitted a transfer request. And what more, Paul Scholes has retired, leaving David Moyes with more worries than he would have hoped for. Manchester United is going through an overhaul, and the fans are seriously worried about the outcome.
It will be of no surprise if Manchester United take a while to get back to the top. The club, which has seen only one face as its manager for long 26 years, is undergoing a massive change, not only with the management, but also with the staff and players.
It is the end of an era for Manchester United football club. But as Sir Matt Busby once said, it is not the end, it is just the beginning.
