England face off against Switzerland in the third quarter-final of UEFA Euro 2024 this Saturday. The game will take place at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf.
England and Switzerland made it to this stage of the tournament with very different styles of play. The Three Lions needed an injury-time goal from Jude Bellingham to draw level with Slovakia before winning the game in extra time thanks to a Harry Kane header.
Switzerland, on the other hand, made light work of Euro 2020 winners Italy, winning 2-0 with goals either side of halftime from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas.

Despite this, both teams will be hopeful of advancing to the semi-finals next week. So which side will come out on top?
England vs Switzerland Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- England's record against Switzerland is an exemplary one. In 27 meetings, the Three Lions have come out on top 19 times, drawing five games and only losing to the Swiss on three occasions. In fact, England have not lost to this weekend's opponents since 1981.
- The last time England met Switzerland in the European Championship was in 2004 in a group-stage clash. England ran out 3-0 winners in that game thanks in part to Wayne Rooney's first two goals in a major tournament.
- Switzerland have scored seven goals in this tournament, and remarkably, seven different players have scored them. In contrast, England have scored four goals, with both Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham scoring two.
- By making the quarter-finals, Switzerland have already equalled their best-ever performance in the European Championship. They made it to the quarter-finals in 2020 after dumping out World Cup holders France in the Round of 16.
- Saturday's game will be a landmark one for Gareth Southgate. It will mark his 100th game in charge of the national side, with only Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey taking charge of more.
England vs Switzerland Prediction
This is a massively difficult game to predict, purely because England's form has not matched their status as one of the tournament favourites coming into Euro 2024.
On paper, they are a superior side to Switzerland, being able to call upon the likes of Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham. To add to this, they have a fantastic record against their opponents.
However, Switzerland have looked in tremendous form over the past few games, and largely whitewashed Italy in the round of 16.
Despite this, England's late win against Slovakia may prove to be the turning point for Gareth Southgate's side, particularly if left-back Luke Shaw is able to return and provide the team with some much-needed balance.
It won't be easy, and the game may well go into extra time, but we expect England to secure a narrow win.
