Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United
Cardiff City 0-1 Tottenham
That’s it for us. Before we go, let me recap today’s late-starting matches. City thumped United 4-1, while Tottenham eked out a vital win on the road against Cardiff 1-0. Thanks for following our commentary. ‘Night. And as I type, Tottenham have gone sneaked a late-late goal courtesy Paulinho. Massive three points for the North London club. Another three minutes to go in the Cardiff-Tottenham match. It’s still 0-0 by the way. Two goals from Aguero, one apiece for Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri. FULL TIME: Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United Three minutes of injury time. City wouldn’t mind that. United finally showing some potency in front of City goal. But it’s a bit too late in the day though. One minute of the 90 remaining. 87′ Well well well..Rooney unleashes an absolute peach from a dead ball situation. Runs to the ball and smashes it with vengeance from around 30 metres. We were all slagging Rooney, weren’t we? I’ll stay mum now. GOAL Rooney Substitution Aguero on for Javi Garcia Five minutes to go.. A minor scuffle at the far-end of the pitch between Vidic and Aguero. Vidic mouths a earful to the Argentinian striker. The fight’s still there in the Serbian dog. 78′ When it rains, it pours. It seems it’s rodding down for United. An Evra header from a corner sees the ball hit the post to deny his team a consolation goal. United simply going through the motion now. A period you would jocularly term as an on-field therapy time. 78′ DDG almost revives the spirit of Roy Carroll. de Gea is unable to cope with a harmless looking long ranger by Dzeko but his cat-like reflexes save him from further embarrassment. Over in south Wales, it’s still 0-0 between Cardiff and Tottenham. 15 minutes remaining for City to celebrate this win and for United to slinker away quietly into their burroughs. Negredo comes off to a rousing ovation from the City fans. The only ingredient missing from that near-perfect performance was the ruffling of the net. A ruffled United wouldn’t mind though. Substitution Dzeko on for Negredo 71′ City don’t look too content with 4-0 lead. Negeredo gets a chance to put his team five-up only for his shot, which was taken from right outside the penalty box, to swerve away from de Gea’s goal in the last minute. United would be relieved. Substitution Milner on for Navas Yellow Card for Valencia for losing his goat on the ref Webber. 68′ Fellaini has a pop at the City goal only for his team to get a corner from it, which is then handled with ease by the City defence. That was, methink, the first kind of activity of the day for Joe Hart. It’s been a dog day afternoon for Wayne Rooney. A promising looking freekick is wasted as the English frontman crashes his free-kick into the City wall. Disappointing. Amid all the hoopla, Young has come off and Cleverley takes his place on the left side of the mid-field.
Etihad is rocking The fans are reminding their neighbours of the 6-1 loss now. Not a great time to be a United fan for sure. United have been out-muscled, out-paced in this high-octane encounter. Sumptuous play by City results in another cross for them, which eventually comes to nothing. 54′ CLOSE! An innocuous looking cross from Valencia is made to look better due to Welbeck’s dupe. The ball rolls on to Rooney whose shot sails over the crossbar from six yards. That should have been buried. And Rooney duly buries his face in his hands. City on the rampage now. They are looking to resusciate the drubbing they handed to United two seasons back at Old Trafford. Aguero plays a delightful pass through the porous United defene to Navas. Navas whips in a difficult low pass for Rio Ferdinand to contend with. City are breaking down the door now. United look disppirited and any talks of Moyes’ litmus test this half sounds hollow inside the first five minutes of the second half. 50′ Delightful cross by Navas leaves with a simple header for Nasri to give the Citizens a four-goal lead. Drubbing on the way for United. The media and the ABUs will have a field-week now. City 4-0 United 46′ Any hopes of a United comeback has been snuffed out by the Aguero-Negredo combo. Negredo wrestles past the United defence to lay it off to leave Aguero to slot it into the United net. Another 6-1 pasting, anyone? City 3-0 United And the second half gets underway in Manchester
A loss at the Etihand, along with their away loss at Anfield, will pile on thr pressure on the United gaffer. For Pellegrini, this has been the apt tonic and a win here will atone for the slow start to the season. Half Time summary City were on speed in the opening 15 minutes. United clawed their way back into the match but the late goal has literally snuffed out United’s hope, and has got the Etihad rocking to the rafters. Litmus test for David Moyes and his boys now. Half Time City 2-0 United Simplest finish for Toure as United look soft while dealing with the cross. Negredo flicks the ball for the Ivorian to tap in from a couple yards. Replays show Toure slipping past his marker Fellaini for the goal. City on the rampage! Goal Yaya Toure Yet another corner for City. One minute injury time added. Free-kick to United. But City deal with comfortably and Young does him no favours by overcooking his long pass. Over in south Wales, Cardiff has tempered Tottenham’s play and have got back in the match now.
Five minutes left for the first half. 39′ Waste! A swift counter-attack by City leads to nothing as Negredo goes solo courtesy a wayward shot. Choosing to pass a marauding Yaya Toure would have been the better bet there. CORNER for City. 37′ The pace has subsided. Both teams have settled into the game now. City look satisfied with their lead while United look to work openings from the right hand side of the pitch. Laboured play by United so far. They are seeking to slow down the game which had a frentic start. On the other hand, Negredo and Aguero are stretching the United defence with their clever runs. United have seen more of the ball in the last five minutes but most of their play has laxked any penetration. It’s been tippy-tappy stuff in front of City’s defence.
In the interregnum, Negredo asks for a penalty as he feels his shot is blocked by Smalling’s right hand. 29′ Yellow for Wayne Rooney. Rooney vents his frustration to get into the books. Was his third foul of the match. 29′ United are seeing more of the ball now.
While at Cardiff:
23′ Fourth corner for City but United deal with it well. 23′ United finally have the ball and almost eke out a goal out of nothing. A fine through-ball by Welbeck to Rooney almost unlocks the City defence but the ref flags it offside.
19′ Manchester City look to tighten the noose as they continue to lay siege on United’s half. City finally get what they deserve for their opening 15 minutes. Nifty footwork from Nasri allows the left back Kolarov to overlap the Frenchman, who whips in a flat cross for Aguero to dexterously slot the ball into the United net. Exquisite. 16′ GOAL (Manchester City 1-0 United) 14′ Third corner for City Lackadaisical play from United means that they are finding it tough to get any breathing space. City are definitely bossing the midfield now with Yaya Toure being the fulcrum to every thing good for the Citizens. United are defending deep now, hoping to see out the early pressure. A dangerous looking corner in the near-post elicits David de Gea into prompt action. The Spaniard punches it out of the danger zone to shoo away any danger lurking around the United citadel. 10′ Corner for City First simulation warning inside the first five minutes of the game. 5′ It’s heating up now. Nastasic gets a yellow for going rough on United defender Smalling. And United deals with corner comfortably. Young clears it upfield to Zabaleta but the Argentine makes a sloppy long pass. 3′ Corner for City KICK OFF Manchester United subs: Subs: Amos, Evans, Hernandez, Nani, Cleverley, Kagawa, Buttner Manchester City subs: Pantilimon, Lescott, Richards, Garcia, Milner, Jovetic, Dzeko Under five minutes for the kick-off. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to Sky Sports: “Alvaro Negredo starts. Edin Dzeko had a very good match in the Champions League, but we are always making some rotation and for this game I think it is better to start with Negredo. They are different players. They are both strikers. I must trust both of them and they are both in a very good moment.” Manchester United were without Rooney for the Chelsea match, and now they are without van Persie for this ‘six-pointer’ clash against City. Speak of ill-luck..
Robin van Persie’s consistency in the EPL is astounding.
The biggest news coming out of the pre-game analysis is that Robin van Persie is out injured. This is a massive blog for the Red Devils, and City will no doubt be ecstatic on hearing the news.
Here are the lineups:
