Jan Vertonghen was exceptional in the 2016-17 season along with Kyle Walker in Tottenham Hotspur's defensive set up. Vertonghen has provided tremendous solidity and is technically quite sharp.
Known for his strong tackles, Vertonghen has always been the core of Tottenham Hotspur’s defence manning their territory with authority. The Belgian provides an added width in their defense and steadiness because of his reliability at the back.
The Belgian has highlighted his class with some impressive performances in the current season. The 31-year-old scored a goal in Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the 1st leg of the round of 16 game in the Champions League.
Vertonghen has always been a busy player on the field and has formed the core of Tottenham’s defense along with Toby Alderweireld. His clever interceptions have shut out the best attacks.
Vertonghen played a crucial role for Belgium in last year's World Cup and his experience has come in handy for Pochettino's side. Vertonghen will be a key figure for the Spurs in the defensive set up in the Champions League especially against teams who are quick on counter attacks.
