The Foxes cruised to their first even Premier League trophy in the 2015-16 season in clinical fashion. This meteoric rise has put many of the Leicester stars in the spotlight with major European clubs chasing them. Although defender and captain Wes Morgan looks very unlikely to leave the club, it is a possibility you cannot rule out.
So here are the five players who Leicester could hand over the captain’s armband to, should Morgan leave.
Kasper Schmeichel
The Danish number one and son of legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has played a vital role in Leicester’s successful rise from a second division team to the Premier League Champions. He kept 15 clean sheets, which was the second best in the 2015-16 season, in the process of helping Leicester make history winning the first ever top division trophy in their 132-year history.
Kasper’s leadership skills are no secret as the shot stopper serves as the vice-captain for the Foxes. He can be seen leading from behind, pushing the outfield players every time a goal is conceded or when there is a requirement of a goal. He also holds the record with his father as the only biological father-son duo ever to win the English Premier League
Robert Huth
The sturdy German defender comes with a ton of experience after representing Chelsea, Stoke City and Middlesbrough in England before moving to Leicester. His stability at the back and aerial threat in the box while taking corners has proven to be invaluable for Leicester.
He has risen to the occasion in important games, most notably scoring a double against Manchester City and the lone goal in a clash against Tottenham Hotspur. Huth also boasts international experience in major competitions after pairing with Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker in the 2005 FIFA Confederation’s Cup.
If Huth was to take over as the captain, his style would be very similar to that of Wes Morgan – Strong, vocal and aggressive.
Danny Drinkwater
The Leicester midfielder is a product of Manchester United’s youth academy. He had four stints away on loan from United before sealing a move to the Foxes. His calm head in the midfield has given Leicester composure and stability in the past few seasons.
The player has been a part of PFA championship team of the year in the past and represented the Foxes in over a hundred and fifty games. His consistent performances earned him an international call-up and has made three appearances for the English national team.
Drinkwater would surely be a contender for the Captain’s armband should there be a vacancy for the captain’s armband.
Riyad Mahrez
Leicester City’s talisman, the Algerian international Riyadh Mahrez was, without a doubt, the most important player in Leicester winning the Premier League title last season. Mahrez was also adjudged PFA’s player of the year for his exploits throughout the season.
Although there are doubts whether he has the ability to lead the team with his words, there is no question about his ability to lead the team on the field.
N’Golo Kante
The French midfielder made a €8 million move to the Foxes in the summer of 2015, and has since been regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League at the moment. In his lone season at Leicester, Kante has received praise from all over the world for his clinical performances as a Defensive midfielder.
This recognition has also earned him his first France cap and was picked to represent Didier Deschamps’ men at the ongoing UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. The player has been compared to Claude Makelele on many occasions and has shown unbelievable stamina and composure.
His never-say-die attitude could make him a contender for the captain’s armband should it be available.
Wes Morgan
As previously mentioned, Leicester’s current captain Wes Morgan is unlikely to make a move to another premier league team and hence is most likely to resume captaincy duties in the 2016-17 Premier League season. His leadership skills have been lauded by current manager Claudio Ranieri on many occasions.
“Wes Morgan is Baloo of The Jungle Book. He is a big gentle bear who looks after all the lads. He does not speak so much but when he does speak, everybody listens. He is the perfect captain. I never knew anything about him before I came here. But I watched all the matches, I watched how solid, strong and intelligent he was" said Ranieri.
