Spanish international Juan Mata has revealed that there was ‘a sense of pain and disappointment’ in the Manchester United dressing room following their terrible defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening, their worst in 17 years against Chelsea.
Pain and disappointment in United dressing room, says Mata
Mata, a second half substitute against Chelsea, spoke about the mood in the dressing room after the game, "There's a sense of pain and disappointment obviously. It's a painful result. We came here with the mission of winning and having a good game and from the first minute we started very bad.”
“I felt when we were close to score our first goal they scored the third goal and that was key. We were close to their box trying to create something and they score the third goal,” said the former Chelsea midfielder to Sky Sports.
"In the first half they started better than us and that was key," said the Spaniard
United are 7th in the league table following league defeats to City, Watford and now Chelsea. However, the worrying part for United fans was the team’s overall lacklustre performance in the last couple of league outings, including the boring 0-0 draw at Anfield last Monday night.
A chance at redemption with the League Cup game against Man City
United are now set to play Manchester City at home in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, with the fixtures coming thick and fast for Mourinho and United, who have a lot to sort out in defence, with Bailly limping off injured against Chelsea, and in attack, where the goals have dried up since the start of the campaign.
"It was a painful result but it's just three points and obviously we are not in the best situation," Mata added.
"We have difficult games this week and we have another very important game in three/four days so we need to be together and think about this game and learn from our mistakes."
